Tooth Brushing Mistake No. 3: Not Brushing Often Enough or Long Enough

There’s nothing more important for the care of teeth than regular brushing. In order to guarantee that your child’s teeth remain clean and healthy, you need to make sure that he or she brushes often and spends enough time at every brushing session.

Remember to Brush at Least Twice a Day!

Every parent should know that brushing is needed to prevent the formation on the teeth of tarter, which can lead to cavities and gum disease. Children should brush their teeth after breakfast and before bedtime. If possible, they should brush after every meal, especially after eating or drinking products that have high sugar content. However, it would be wise to delay brushing after consuming such products as fruit juices, which contain acids that can harm the tooth enamel when rubbed with a toothbrush.

Spend Enough Time Brushing!

Brushing twice a day will not be enough if children do not spend enough time with their toothbrushes. It takes at least two minutes to properly brush teeth. One way is to have children divide their mouths into four sections, the inner and outer areas of both the upper and lower teeth, and spending at least 30 seconds in each section. Extra time may be needed to brush areas around crowns, and be sure to spend some time brushing the tongue. Some electric toohbrushes come with timers, or you may use a stopwatch until your child gets the hang of brushing properly.
