Tooth Brushing Mistake No.6: “Starting in the Same Place Each Time”

Are you experiencing sore gums? Are you paying attention as you are brushing your teeth? Sometimes things like brushing our teeth become rote. We think we know how to do it because it’s habit. But we all can get into negative habits and harm our teeth. If you weren’t taught to brush your teeth properly — or if you’ve simply developed some improper skills on your own — then you could be experiencing gum soreness and hurting your teeth in the end.

Notice Before You Brush

One of the big mistakes we all can make as we are brushing our teeth is to start in the same place every time. This often means that a certain side of your mouth gets more attention than the other — leading to tooth decay and gum problems.

Change Your Habits

One way to combat this is to practice starting in an unlikely spot.  If you normally put your toothbrush in your mouth and begin brushing in quick circular motions, not sawing motions, on the right side of your mouth, try the left side tomorrow.  If you usually start upper, try lower. Count as you are brushing to make sure every part of your part receives equal treatment.  By doing this, you are promoting your tooth’s health and helping to ensure all teeth get a sufficient cleaning at least twice a day.
