Orthodontic Fact #2

When you think about going to the orthodontist, the first thing that comes to mind is a mouth full of metal wires and brackets. You need to understand that braces are not the only treatment solution when you need an orthodontic adjustment. A brace is only one type of appliance that can be used by an orthodontist based on your individual needs. There is always the possibility that other appliances will be used to treat a specific jaw or mouth deformity.

Finding the Right Fit for You

When you visit your orthodontist, a careful evaluation will be performed to get to the source of your orthodontic problem. In the end, your doctor may determine that you need one of several appliances that are commonly used. A palatal extender may be recommended if you require a widening of the upper jaw, allowing the top and bottom teeth to have a better fit when they come together. Headgear may be recommended when you need more space in your mouth. A lower lingual holding arch makes room for teeth that are coming in on the bottom portion of your jaw. A nance holding arch is also used to maintain space in your mouth. Twin blocks and a bite palate adjust your bite.

If you do require braces, your doctor may suggest that you try Invisalign. Invisalign aligners are clear, removable aligners that are custom-made to fit your teeth. They will gently shift your teeth into the proper position over time.
